THE CHALLENGE
Creating Livable Space Beneath a Sloped Roof
As the family continued to grow, the homeowners needed more living space but wanted to remain in their existing Braintree home. Their goal was to transform the underused attic into two bedrooms and a full bathroom.
The existing roofline limited headroom and usable floor area, making it difficult to create comfortable rooms within the original attic. The challenge was to expand the upper level while coordinating the new shed dormer with the home’s existing roof and structure.
THE APPROACH
Expanding the Attic With a Shed Dormer
The project uses a new shed dormer to extend the existing roofline, increase headroom, and create more usable floor area across the attic level.
The new roof and wall framing are being coordinated around the planned two-bedroom and full-bathroom layout. Window openings, interior walls, and connections to the existing structure are taking shape as the upper level moves toward enclosure and mechanical rough-ins.

The New Upper Level Is Taking Shape
Construction has reached the structural framing stage, with the new shed dormer, expanded roofline, floor area, and major openings now clearly visible. These photos document how the underused attic is being transformed into a functional upper level with two bedrooms and a full bathroom.
NEXT PHASES
From Structural Framing to a Finished Upper Level
With the shed dormer and primary framing now established, the next milestones will focus on completing the building envelope, window installation, mechanical rough-ins, insulation, and drywall.
As construction progresses, the new upper level will be finished as two bedrooms and a full bathroom, giving the family the additional living space they need while allowing them to remain in their Braintree home.
