THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Designing Around an Existing Window
The design needed to add meaningful everyday storage while preserving the existing window, natural light, and visual balance of the room.
The available wall needed to provide generous storage without covering the fixed window or making the room feel heavy. The concept treats the window as the center of a balanced built-in composition.
01
Preserve Daylight
The central window remains fully visible, allowing natural light through while cabinetry and open storage are organized symmetrically around it.
02
Create Clear Storage Zones
Upper cabinets conceal less-used items, open hanging bays keep coats and bags accessible, and lower cubbies provide dedicated shoe storage.
03
Maintain Visual Balance
White upper cabinetry lightens the elevation, while navy millwork anchors the bench and hanging areas without overwhelming the wall.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
From Sketch to Storage Plan

The hand-drawn elevation establishes how each storage function relates to the existing window. It organizes the wall vertically, placing less frequently used storage above and everyday items within easy reach.
Concealed Storage
Upper cabinets provide enclosed storage for seasonal items and belongings that do not need to remain visible.
Everyday Access
Open beadboard-backed bays and hooks create accessible places for coats, jackets, bags, hats, and smaller daily essentials.

Bench & Shoe Storage
A continuous bench provides seating and temporary placement, while individual cubbies keep shoes organized below.
STORAGE STRATEGY
Storage Planned Around Daily Routines
02
Open Hanging Zones
Two open hanging areas provide accessible storage for coats, jackets, bags, hats, and smaller essentials used when entering or leaving the home.
03
Window-Centered Bench
The continuous bench incorporates the existing window into the composition while providing a practical place to sit, set down bags, or change shoes.
04
Dedicated Shoe Cubbies
Individual lower cubbies give shoes a defined place and reduce the loose items that typically collect around a busy mudroom entrance.
The proposed built-in divides the wall into distinct storage zones so the mudroom can support arrivals, departures, and changing seasonal needs without losing its clean architectural composition.
01
Closed Upper Storage
Upper cabinetry keeps seasonal items and less frequently used belongings enclosed, helping the mudroom maintain a calm and uncluttered appearance.
MATERIAL & VISUAL DIRECTION
A Classic Palette With Architectural Contrast
The proposed palette combines light upper cabinetry, deep navy millwork, and warm brass accents. Together, these elements give the custom mudroom built-in a tailored appearance while keeping the storage composition visually balanced.
Warm White Upper Cabinetry
The lighter upper cabinets keep enclosed storage from feeling visually heavy and connect the built-in with the surrounding trim.
Deep Navy Open Millwork
The navy finish gives depth to the hanging bays, beadboard panels, window surround, and continuous bench.

PROPOSED PALETTE · WARM WHITE · DEEP NAVY · BRASS
Warm Brass Hardware
Brass hooks and cabinet hardware introduce warmth and create a consistent accent across the proposed built-in design.
DESIGN OUTCOME
A Tailored Mudroom Concept for a Newton Home
DESIGN PRIORITIES
Preserved daylight · Clear storage zones · Integrated millwork
The proposed design turns one wall into a coordinated storage system without closing off the existing window. Upper cabinetry, open hooks, bench seating, and shoe cubbies each serve a clear role in the household’s daily routine.
For this Newton home, the concept feels integrated with the room rather than added afterward, combining practical organization with a restrained architectural palette.
PROJECT FAQ

What was included in the Newton mudroom built-in concept?
The concept includes enclosed upper cabinets, two open hanging zones with brass hooks, beadboard backing, a continuous bench, individual shoe cubbies, and millwork arranged around the existing fixed window.

Frequently used coats, bags, and hats are kept in the open hanging zones. Shoes are assigned to lower cubbies, while seasonal and less frequently used belongings can be stored behind the upper cabinet doors.
