THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Rethinking an Outdated Mudroom
The existing mudroom had become dated, and its layout no longer provided the organization or everyday function the homeowners needed.
The design needed to improve storage, circulation, and daily organization within the existing mudroom footprint. The new concept rethinks how cabinetry, seating, hooks, baskets, and drop zones work together so the room feels easier to use and visually more cohesive.
01
Improve Daily Function
The existing arrangement did not provide a clear place for coats, shoes, bags, and smaller items used when entering or leaving the home.
02
Create Defined Storage Zones
The room needed a better balance of closed cabinetry, open hooks, bench seating, basket storage, drawers, and accessible everyday drop zones.
03
Refresh the Entire Room
The updated design needed to replace the dated appearance while creating a calm, coordinated mudroom that feels integrated with the existing home.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
From Draft to a Better Mudroom Plan

The elevation study reorganizes the existing mudroom around the way the household uses it each day. Full-height cabinetry, a bench and hook zone, baskets, drawers, and a compact drop area are arranged to improve storage without crowding the entry.
Tall Cabinet Storage
Full-height cabinetry provides enclosed storage for seasonal items, household supplies, and belongings that do not need to remain visible.
Everyday Hanging Zone
A paneled wall with individual hooks keeps coats, jackets, bags, and other frequently used items accessible near the entry.

Bench, Baskets & Drop Zone
Bench seating, woven baskets, open shelves, and drawers create dedicated places for shoes, smaller essentials, and items set down when entering the home.
STORAGE STRATEGY
Storage Planned Around Daily Routines
The proposed design divides the Canton mudroom into clear storage zones for coats, shoes, bags, household supplies, and smaller everyday essentials. Each element has a defined purpose, helping the renovated room support arrivals, departures, and changing seasonal needs.

Everyday Hook Storage
A paneled hanging zone with individual hooks keeps coats, jackets, bags, and other frequently used items visible and easy to reach.
03
Bench & Basket Storage
The built-in bench provides a practical place to sit or set down bags, while woven baskets below keep shoes and loose items contained.
04
Dedicated Drop Zone
Open shelves and drawers near the door create defined places for keys, mail, accessories, and smaller essentials used throughout the day.
01
Tall enclosed cabinets provide organized storage for seasonal belongings, household supplies, and items that do not need to remain visible every day.
MATERIAL & VISUAL DIRECTION
A Warm Neutral Palette With Natural Texture
The proposed palette combines warm greige cabinetry, soft white walls and trim, natural wood flooring, and woven storage baskets. Together, these materials give the renovated mudroom a calm, welcoming appearance while keeping the room practical for everyday use.
Warm Greige Cabinetry
The muted cabinet finish gives the built-in a grounded, furniture-like appearance while remaining soft enough for a bright entry space.

Soft White Walls & Trim
Warm white walls, doors, and trim reflect natural light and create a clean background for the darker cabinetry and storage details.
