Kitchen Remodeling in Canton, MA: Why We Recommend Vaulted Ceilings

One of the most common complaints we hear from homeowners in Canton and the surrounding towns is: "My ceilings feel too low." In many older New England homes, 8-foot flat ceilings can make even a large kitchen feel cramped and dark. If you can’t build out (add square footage), the best solution is often to build up.

In this recent kitchen remodeling project in Canton, MA, we completely transformed the space by opening up the roofline to create a vaulted ceiling.

Why Vault Your Ceiling? If you are planning a renovation, we highly recommend considering a vaulted or cathedral ceiling. It adds architectural drama and makes the room feel twice as big without changing the footprint of the house.

However, vaulting a ceiling isn't just about removing the drywall. It requires "Architectural Logic" and serious structural work.

Structural Integrity: The "Skeleton" of the Vault When you remove the flat ceiling joists, you remove the ties that hold the walls together. To keep the house stable, we install engineered lumber.

In this project, we utilized heavy-duty engineered beams and PSL posts (Parallel Strand Lumber). These materials are incredibly strong and allow us to span long distances without sagging, ensuring the new roof structure is rock solid.

The Design Detail: Slope and Partial Flat A common misconception is that a vaulted ceiling must come to a sharp point at the top. For this kitchen, we designed a sloped ceiling with a partial flat center. This design is smart for two reasons:

  1. Utilities: The small flat section at the peak gives us room to run HVAC ducts and wiring for the recessed lights (as you can see in the framing photos).

  2. Aesthetics: It creates a cleaner, more modern look than a sharp peak.

Trust the Process Opening up a roof is complex work involving framing, electrical rough-ins, and insulation. But as you can see from the finished plaster work, the result is worth it.
